A backup is a copy of data from a specific point in time — used to restore after a failure or accidental deletion. Replication is the ongoing copying of changes to a second location — it enables failover to a backup system when the primary one goes down. An ideal environment combines both mechanisms.

RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum time to restore systems after a failure. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum acceptable data loss. They're defined through business analysis: how much an hour of downtime costs, what data loss is acceptable. Based on this we design technical safeguards.
